Why we teach
Faith, language, and identity — all in one room.
The Fulbe Madrassa exists because a generation cannot inherit what it has never been taught. The programme combines spiritual formation with the language and cultural literacy that anchor Fulbe identity — without forcing parents to choose between the two.

Rigour with patience
Memorisation is paced to the child. We do not race to numbers; we build the foundation that lasts.
Pulaar at the centre
Instruction in Pulaar, not as a token, but as the first language of the classroom.
Open to all Fulbe children
Membership in TP SL is not a precondition. Families are welcome regardless of their relationship to the organisation.
Around the lesson
A culture surrounds every classroom.
The Madrassa is not just a room with a book. It sits inside a wider community life — Pulaar at home, the rhythm of the week, the elders who carry the tradition forward.
01Pulaar literacy
Reading and writing the language of the home.
02Cultural values
Hakkil, Munyal, Ndimal — taught alongside the text.
03Community life
Children learn together, with families nearby.
04Faith first
Quran and prayer at the heart of the day.
Curriculum
Four tracks, one path.
Children progress through four tracks at their own pace. Each track sets out specific skills the student is expected to leave with — measurable, not vague.
Ages 5–7
Track 1 — Foundation
Arabic alphabet, basic recitation, first Pulaar literacy.
- Recognise and write the Arabic alphabet
- Recite Al-Fatiha and the short surahs
- Read simple Pulaar text aloud
Ages 8–10
Track 2 — Recitation
Tilawah with tajwid rules, memorisation of Juz Amma, Pulaar reading.
- Recite with proper tajwid (makharij and sifat)
- Memorise Juz Amma (Surah An-Naba through An-Nas)
- Read and write paragraph-length Pulaar
Ages 11–14
Track 3 — Studies
Islamic Studies (aqidah, fiqh of worship), Arabic grammar, Pulaar oral traditions.
- Explain the pillars of faith and worship in their own words
- Parse simple Arabic sentences (nahw basics)
- Recount Pulaar oral histories and proverbs
Ages 15+
Track 4 — Advanced
Tahfiz pathway, classical texts, leadership in community recitation.
- Begin formal tahfiz (memorisation of the full Quran)
- Read selected passages of classical Arabic prose
- Lead recitation at community gatherings

A parent's voice
Our two boys started in Track 1 not knowing a single Arabic letter. Two years later they recite at the family iftar — and they argue with me about Pulaar grammar over dinner.
When classes meet
Two regular sessions, no surprises.
The Madrassa runs a predictable weekly schedule so families can plan around it. Holidays follow the school calendar.
Weekend session
Saturdays & Sundays · 9:00 — 13:00
All tracks. Primary session for most families.
Evening session
Tuesdays & Thursdays · 17:00 — 19:00
Track 2+ only. Reinforcement for working students.
Enrolment
How to enrol your child.
Four steps, no paperwork the first time. Once a family is registered, future siblings just walk in.

For parents
Common questions.
Is there a fee?
There is no enrolment fee. Families contribute voluntarily toward materials and the annual graduation celebration; no child is turned away for lack of contribution.
Does my child need to speak Pulaar already?
No. Many of our beginners come in speaking Krio at home. We work with the child where they are; Pulaar literacy is part of what they leave with, not what they arrive with.
Is the Madrassa only for boys?
No. Boys and girls are both enrolled, and tracks are taught together at the foundation level. From Track 3 onward, we follow community norms while ensuring girls have the same access to advanced material.
Who are the teachers?
Our ustadhs are qualified through traditional and formal Islamic study. The Education Secretary keeps the faculty roster up to date and visible to parents.
Can my child attend even if my family is not a TP SL member?
Yes. The Madrassa is open to all Fulbe children. Membership is welcome, but it is not a precondition.
